Answers Your Vascular Care Questions by Marc Salhanick, MD, RPVI

What are varicose veins?  What is the difference between varicose veins and spider veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins most commonly found in the leg.  While varicose veins are often a cosmetic concern, they can cause pain and discomfort for some people.  Varicose veins can develop into more serious problems such as bleeding, ulcers, and blood clots.

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins but smaller in size and closer to the surface of the skin.  They often occur on the leg and face.

What treatment options are available for varicose veins?

Treatment for varicose veins depends on their size and whether they cause the patient pain or discomfort.  Laser treatments are often used for smaller varicose snd spider veins, while sclerotherapy uses an injection to close small to medium-sized veins.  Large varicose veins may require surgery for removal and to address complications, such as leg ulcers, skin discoloration, or swelling.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis and how do I know if I am at risk?

Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT, occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins on the body, typically in the leg.  DVT can become very serious if a blood clot breaks loose and travels through your bloodstream.

Patients with medical conditions that affect their blood clotting are at greater risk for developing DVT.  Age, obesity, smoking, and heart failure are some of the other risk factors for developing DVT.

Where are procedures performed?

While some procedures are performed in-office, surgical procedures are conducted at Medical City Dallas, Lewisville, McKinney, and Las Colinas. For more information about these facilities, visit Medical City Healthcare
